World Wetlands Day Celebration 2025

World Wetlands Day, celebrated annually on February 2nd, is a global event that highlights the importance of wetlands for our planet's health and biodiversity. The Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs in partnership with uMhlathuze Municipality and uMngeni-uThukela Water visited Empembeni Primary School and Ncombo Primary School under King Cetshwayo District Municipality joining the worldwide celebration by organizing a series of engaging and educational activities to raise awareness about the critical role wetlands play in sustaining life on Earth.

This year’s theme, " Protecting Wetlands for Our Common Future", emphasized the need for conservation and sustainable use of these vital ecosystems for the future. Students showcased their creativity by designing posters reflecting the beauty and significance of wetlands The day began with a special assembly where students and teachers gathered to learn about the significance of wetlands. A presentation highlighted how wetlands act as natural water filters, provide habitats for countless species, and help mitigate climate change by storing carbon. The assembly also emphasized the threats wetlands face, such as pollution, urbanization, and climate change, and the urgent need for their conservation.

The celebration also included a 10-fruit tree donated to each school and a clean-up campaign around the school premises, symbolizing our commitment to protecting and restoring wetland ecosystems. Learners pledged to take small but meaningful actions in their daily lives, such as reducing water waste, avoiding littering, and spreading awareness about wetland conservation.

The World Wetlands Day celebration at Empembeni Primary School and Ncombo Primary School was not only an opportunity to learn but also a call to action. It inspired learners to become stewards of the environment and to appreciate the invaluable role wetlands play in sustaining our planet. By fostering a sense of responsibility and connection to nature, we hope to contribute to a brighter, more sustainable future for all.
