Excitement and celebration filled the air today as KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs, Rev. Musa Zondi, together with uMngeni Municipality Mayor, Cllr Chris Pappas, handed over business equipment to local entrepreneurs through the Municipal Employment Initiative (MEI). The grateful and enthusiastic beneficiaries received once-off equipment funding that will strengthen their businesses, improve productivity and unlock new opportunities for growth and job creation.

The Municipal Employment Initiative (MEI) is a Local Economic Development (LED) intervention aimed at stimulating inclusive economic growth, creating employment opportunities and supporting the sustainability of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) within the uMngeni Local Municipality. The programme prioritises operational businesses located in township, rural and historically disadvantaged communities. Implemented through a Grant Funding Agreement between the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs (EDTEA) and the uMngeni Local Municipality, the initiative demonstrates a shared commitment to empowering local entrepreneurs and strengthening the local economy.

The programme is supported by a total investment of R2 170 078.30, with EDTEA contributing R1 million, matched by R1 million from the Municipality, and an additional R170 078.30 provided by the Municipality to cover the funding shortfall. All expenditure is managed in accordance with the Grant Funding Agreement and the Supply Chain Management provisions of the Municipal Finance Management Act (MFMA). The handover was met with excitement and appreciation from beneficiaries, many of whom described the support as a game-changer that will enable them to expand their businesses, increase their competitiveness and create lasting economic opportunities within their communities.
