PORTFOLIO COMMITTEE CONDUCTS FOLLOW-UP OVERSIGHT VISIT TO KING CETSHWAYO WASTE DISPOSAL SITE

The KwaZulu-Natal Legislature’s Conservation and Environmental Affairs Portfolio Committee conducted a follow-up oversight visit to the King Cetshwayo District waste disposal site on 12 August 2026, to assess progress made since its previous oversight visit on 13 November 2024.

The oversight visit was supported by the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs (EDTEA), led by Head of Department Dr. Nkosenye Zulu, who participated in the assessment of progress and ongoing challenges at the site. The follow-up visit focused on assessing the current compliance status of the waste disposal site and evaluating progress made in addressing matters identified during the Committee’s previous oversight visit.

The Committee received updates on interventions undertaken by EDTEA following the previous oversight visit, including engagements with the King Cetshwayo District Municipality, capacity-building initiatives and environmental awareness campaigns aimed at strengthening waste management practices and promoting compliance. A key focus of the oversight was to determine whether meaningful progress had been made at the landfill site and to assess the extent to which concerns raised during the previous visit had been addressed. The Committee also received an update on enforcement actions taken against the King Cetshwayo District Municipality, as well as other developments relating to the management and compliance of the site.
