The Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs (EDTEA), together with Umkhanyakude District Municipality and Jozini Local Municipality, hosted a successful National Invasive Alien Species Awareness Campaign at the Nyathini Sports Field in Jozini Local Municipality. This collaborative effort formed part of a broader provincial programme aimed at educating communities about the dangers posed by invasive alien species and promoting responsible environmental stewardship.
The programme began with a symbolic tree-planting ceremony at Nyathini Primary School, which set the tone for the day’s activities. The initiative was spearheaded by Mr Nkosinathi Scelo Myeni, Mayor of Jozini Local Municipality, who planted the first indigenous tree alongside EDTEA representatives, Principal of Nyathini Primary School, and municipal officials. This act demonstrated a commitment to restoring local ecosystems and promoting the growth of native plant species in the area.
Following the tree-planting session, environmental practitioners conducted a live alien species removal demonstration. This practical activity showcased methods for identifying and safely clearing invasive plants that threaten the region’s biodiversity. The Mayor of Jozini Local Municipality and senior officials were guided through hands-on demonstrations, equipping them with skills to manage invasive species within their communities.
The event highlighted the importance of protecting natural environments and encouraged community participation in ecosystem restoration. Through education, partnership, and active involvement, the National Invasive Alien Species Awareness Campaign in Jozini strengthened local efforts to safeguard South Africa’s natural heritage.
