MEC ZONDI CHAMPIONS THE FUTURE OF KWAZULU-NATAL’S SUGAR INDUSTRY

MEC for Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs, Rev. Musa Zondi, has reaffirmed the importance of the sugar industry as a cornerstone of KwaZulu-Natal’s rural economy at the KwaZulu-Natal Sugar Industry Colloquium, bringing together key stakeholders to deliberate on the future, sustainability and transformation of the sector.

Emphasising the industry’s deep-rooted significance to the province, MEC Zondi stated: “Sugar is not just another industry in this province. It is a pillar of our rural economy. Cane has been grown along our coast and in parts of the Midlands for generations.”

The colloquium provides a platform for government, growers, millers and industry stakeholders to address challenges facing the sector, strengthen industry protection, explore diversification and unlock opportunities across the sugarcane value chain.

MEC Zondi’s participation underscores the provincial government’s commitment to safeguarding livelihoods, supporting growers and advancing a sustainable and inclusive sugar industry that continues to contribute to rural development, job creation and economic growth in KwaZulu-Natal.
