The MEC for Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs (EDTEA), Rev. Musa Zondi, has stressed the importance of collaboration between research institutions and industry to create impactful, community-focused solutions.
He was speaking at the dynamic Researchers and Business Leaders Breakfast held in Durban this morning, hosted by EDTEA in partnership with the Moses Kotane Research Institute (MKRI) and the Department of Information and Corporate Management (ICM) at the Durban University of Technology (DUT). This high-level gathering brought together more than 120 influential leaders from government, academia, business, labour and civil society. It offered a valuable space for open dialogue and practical brainstorming around some of KwaZulu-Natal’s most urgent challenges - including the skills gap and high youth unemployment rate.
Delivering the keynote address, MEC Zondi, highlighted MKRI’s vital role as a policy think tank that supports the provincial government with evidence-based research and strategic guidance. “Let us use this business breakfast not just to share ideas, but to agree on real actions we can take together,” said MEC Zondi. He added: “We need practical, targeted partnerships that leave a lasting legacy. This is not only about developing skills - it’s about social justice, economic dignity, and unlocking the full potential of our youth in KwaZulu-Natal.”
Other notable speakers included Professor Oludayo Olugbara and Professor Smangele Moyane from DUT, who shared insights on how stronger ties between academia and industry can help drive meaningful change in the province.
