The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs (EDTEA), led by MEC Rev. Musa Zondi, today hosted an Aviation Career Awareness Day at Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi Airport in the Zululand District. The event brought together learners, aviation industry stakeholders and local government leadership to expose young people to the diverse career opportunities available within the aviation sector. Among the stakeholders in attendance was Inkosi N.Z. Buthelezi.

Held under the theme “Igniting Young Minds: Building Tomorrow’s Aviation Professionals,” the initiative sought to broaden learners’ understanding of the aviation industry and highlight the various career pathways available beyond the traditional roles of pilots and cabin crew. Learners were introduced to opportunities spanning aviation management, aircraft maintenance, air traffic control, airport operations, engineering and other specialised fields. The Head of Department, Dr. Nkosenye Zulu, outlined the purpose of the day, emphasising the importance of providing young people with access to information and meaningful exposure that can assist them in making informed decisions about their education and future careers.

Delivering the keynote address, KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs, Rev. Musa Zondi, encouraged learners to take advantage of the opportunities presented to them and to consider the aviation industry as a viable career path. He emphasised the importance of education, determination and continuous skills development in preparing young people to participate meaningfully in the economy.

The awareness provided learners with an opportunity to engage with aviation professionals, gain insight into the requirements of different careers and learn about the educational pathways needed to enter the sector. It also served as a platform to inspire young people to look beyond conventional career choices and consider the aviation industry as a space where they can build rewarding careers and contribute to the growth of the provincial economy.
