INNOVATION MEETS INDIGENOUS KNOWLEDGE

The first session of the Innovation & Indigenous Knowledge Systems Conference is officially underway at the Olive Convention Centre in Durban, setting an energetic tone for two days of bold thinking and meaningful exchange.Hosted by the KZN Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs (EDTEA) in partnership with MKRI, the conference brings together innovators, researchers, entrepreneurs and community knowledge holders.

Opening the conference, MEC for Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs, Rev. Musa Zondi, delivered a powerful keynote address, highlighting the importance of blending Indigenous Knowledge Systems with modern innovation to unlock inclusive economic growth in KwaZulu-Natal.

“Our indigenous knowledge is not a thing of the past; it is a living asset. When we combine it with innovation, we create solutions that are sustainable, ethical and deeply rooted in our communities,” said MEC Zondi.

The conference featured research-led discussions, an investor-focused panel led by MKRI CEO Dr Thandeka Ellenson, and innovators presenting practical solutions, including sustainable businesses that recycle used cooking oil into cosmetic products, reinforcing the role of partnerships and indigenous knowledge-based innovation in development.
