The Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs (EDTEA), in partnership with the South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) and the Agricultural Research Council (ARC), successfully hosted the Invasive Alien Species (IAS) Plant Identification Workshop under the theme “Emerging Weeds Workshop.” The event brought together key stakeholders from government, research institutions, conservation agencies to strengthen capacity in identifying and managing invasive alien plants across KwaZulu-Natal.
The event served as a critical platform to raise awareness about the risks and impacts of emerging weeds, share the latest research and management practices, and foster collaboration and knowledge-sharing in tackling the growing threat of invasive species to biodiversity and sustainable development among stakeholders. Participants engaged in insightful discussions aimed at developing effective strategies for prevention and control while crafting a roadmap to address emerging weed challenges across the province.
As the province continues to face increasing environmental pressures, the Emerging Weeds Workshop represents a decisive step toward a coordinated and sustainable approach to invasive species management in KwaZulu-Natal. Through collective effort and shared knowledge, stakeholders are paving the way for healthier, more resilient ecosystems that support both people and nature.
