The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Economic Development, Tourism, and Environmental Affairs, through its Biodiversity (Invasive Alien Plant Species) Management program, has furnished its new offices with furniture made by EPWP beneficiaries.
Invasive alien plant species—non-native plants introduced to ecosystems where they are not indigenous—pose a significant threat. These plants can outcompete native species, disrupt ecosystem processes, and cause damage to infrastructure, leading to economic losses in agriculture, tourism, and recreation. As such, their removal is essential.
During the clearing process, some of the offcuts from these invasive plants have been repurposed into furniture, coffins, and even podiums.
The Eco Furniture Programme, initiated in 2005, aims to control the spread of invasive plant species while creating job opportunities and providing practical skills training in forestry and carpentry through biomass utilization.
