In a heartwarming event held today, on 23 May 2025, the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Economic Development, Tourism, and Environmental Affairs (EDTEA), through its Biodiversity Management Programme focused on invasive alien plant species, celebrated a milestone in its Furniture Programme in Bulwer, under uMgungundlovu District.
The programme, which produces high-quality church furniture at below-market prices, aims to support local religious institutions while promoting the sustainable use of invasive alien plant species. St. Catherine Mission is among the latest beneficiaries, acquiring much-needed furniture for its congregation.
As part of the department’s ongoing efforts to support local communities, St. Catherine Mission in Bulwer received a generous donation of 40 benches and three celebrant chairs. In a moving show of appreciation, the church gave back to the department by donating one operator's trousers and two protective helmets, acknowledging EDTEA’s impactful contribution.
Chief Director Mr. Dlamini, speaking on behalf of the Head of Department, Mr. Nkotwana, officially presented a letter of appreciation for the church’s thoughtful donation. The ceremony highlighted the spirit of mutual support and community upliftment that underpins the Furniture Programme. This initiative continues to highlight how sustainable environmental management can intersect with social development, making a meaningful difference in the lives of KwaZulu-Natal residents. The programme continues to expand its reach, providing affordable furniture to churches while contributing to environmental management by repurposing invasive plant material.
