The MEC for the Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs (EDTEA), Rev. Musa Zondi, joined the Premier of KwaZulu-Natal, Mr Thami Ntuli, at the 50th Anniversary of the 1976 Youth Uprising Commemoration held at the Durban University of Technology in the eThekwini Metro Municipality.
The commemoration honoured the bravery and sacrifice of the youth of 1976, whose courage in the fight against apartheid helped shape South Africa’s democracy. The occasion also served as a reminder of the shared responsibility to empower today’s youth through education, skills development, entrepreneurship and meaningful economic opportunities.
EDTEA’s public entities proudly participated in the event by showcasing the programmes and support they provide to young people, entrepreneurs and businesses across the province. Their participation highlighted the department’s ongoing commitment to creating opportunities that enable young people to contribute to economic growth and sustainable development in KwaZulu-Natal.
Addressing the gathering, MEC Zondi called for a renewed commitment to creating an environment where young people can thrive. He encouraged the youth to embrace the many opportunities available through skills development, entrepreneurship and economic empowerment programmes, emphasising that investing in young people is essential to building a stronger and more inclusive economy.
The MEC also reminded young people that they matter and should never underestimate their potential. He urged them to believe in their abilities, seize every opportunity available to them, and become active participants in driving the economic growth and development of KwaZulu-Natal.
