The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Economic Development, Tourism, and Environmental Affairs (EDTEA), through its Value-Added Industries (VAI) Programme and the Biodiversity Management Directorate, today hosted an induction training and certificate handover ceremony for participants of the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP).
The event, held at Cedara College in uMgungundlovu District, marked the culmination of a three-year initiative who have successfully completed training in business management and snake awareness. The ceremony celebrated the achievements of participants who completed specialised training in business management, and snake awareness—a critical skillset in a biodiversity-rich province like KwaZulu-Natal. This year’s cohort, drawn from seven municipalities, is the final group to graduate from the programme, which began in 2023.
The VAI Programme’s core objective is to transfer sustainable skills to participants, enabling them to establish cooperatives and SMMEs post-training. Presentations at the event highlighted:
Speaking at the event, EDTEA representatives underscored the programme’s alignment with provincial goals to reduce unemployment and foster inclusive growth. “This initiative not only imparts skills but also plants the seeds for sustainable livelihoods,” said Mr. Tusani Hlongwane.
The event concluded with the signing of contracts for the 2025 programme cycle, ensuring continued support for emerging entrepreneurs and reinforcing the Department’s commitment to skills development and sustainable livelihoods.
