Deputy Minister in the Presidency Mr K Morolong visited uMgungundlovu

Deputy Minister in the Presidency Mr Kenneth Morolong today 06 November visited uMgungundlovu District as part of build-up activities ahead of Presidential Imbizo and he was welcomed by Mayor of uMgungundlovu District Municipality, Cllr Zuma and Mayor of Msunduzi Municipality, Cllr Thebolla. The visit started at Pietermaritzburg’s Old Prison where prominent political activists such as the late Zulu King Dinuzulu kaCetshwayo, Harry Gwala were detained for standing up against colonialism.

There were taken through the rich history of the prison, which once held prominent South African heroes and heroines, highlighting the struggles and sacrifices of those who were incarcerated the prison.

During the address at the Old Prison, Deputy Minister Morolong reflected on the painful sacrifices made by freedom fighters in their resistance against colonialism to bring about 30 Years of Freedom.

"Pietermaritzburg should take pride in its rich history," said the Deputy Minister. "The city has produced individuals of great dignity who have played pivotal roles in politics and contributed to the freedoms we enjoy today."

The next site was The Station where Deputy Minister Morolong paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi by laying flowers at his monument in remembrance of the iconic struggle leader, before heading to the Nelson Mandela Capture Site.
