COMMEMORATING EMI DAY 2025

Today, 20 November 2025, the Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs (EDTEA), together with the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE), eThekwini Municipality, and the Department of Water and Sanitation, came together to commemorate EMI Day under the powerful theme: “Green Scorpions, the protectors of the environment for future generations.”

The commemoration brought into focus the vital work of Environmental Management Inspectors (EMIs), widely known as the Green Scorpions, who are responsible for monitoring compliance with environmental legislation and enforcing action against contraventions. Their role is essential in ensuring industries operate responsibly and sustainably.

To mark the day, teams of EMIs conducted extensive environmental inspections across several key industrial sites in Durban. These included Transnet and Grindrod at Maydon Wharf, Sancryl Chemicals, Masa Lubricants, Just Flexibles, HPM Recycling, and Solex Packaging and many more. The inspections assessed compliance levels, identified environmental risks, and reinforced the importance of adherence to legal standards.

The day’s activities underscored the collective commitment of government and industry stakeholders to protect natural resources and reduce harmful environmental impacts. Through active enforcement, collaboration, and continuous awareness, the Green Scorpions demonstrated their unwavering dedication to preserving the environment for the wellbeing of current communities and future generations.
