Africa Automotive Industry Potential

The MEC for Economic Development, Tourism, and Environmental Affairs, Rev. Musa Zondi, has this evening, 05 May 2025 delivered a message of support during the official launch of the Toyota Wessels Institute for Manufacturing Studies (TWIMS) Africa Automotive Executive Short Course in Durban. This programme is designed to address the dynamic opportunities and challenges facing the automotive sector in Africa.

This year's cohort includes 26 distinguished participants from 19 countries, comprising senior government officials and industry leaders. They will engage deeply with the opportunities and challenges associated with advancing Africa's automotive production ambitions.

In his address to the attendees, MEC Zondi emphasised the vision of the KwaZulu-Natal government which is to position the province not only as a manufacturing hub but also as a center for automotive innovation that significantly contributes to Africa's future mobility solutions.

“Let us continue to forge partnerships, create platforms, and unlock new opportunities so that together, we can propel KZN and Africa into a new era of inclusive growth, industrial strength, and shared prosperity,” said MEC Zondi.

Over the next nine weeks, the programme will cover global technology trends, localisation strategies, supplier development, regional value chain development, and relevant policy frameworks. In addition to seminar discussions, participants will also undertake site visits in Durban and Gqeberha.
