The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs commemorated the arbor and weedbuster day in the Umgungundlovu district today.
Arbour Day, also known as Arbor Day, is a global observance promoting tree planting, tree care and environmental awareness. The day encourages individuals, communities and organizations to plant and maintain trees, highlighting their significance for ecosystems, climate and human well-being.
This commemoration forms part of many other concerted efforts and campaigns the Department has aimed at raising awareness about planting indigenous trees and the removal of alien species.
MEC Musa Zondi delivered his speech and cited his contentment for having learners present as the act of tree planting in communities will be carried from generation to generation.
Upon conclusion of the formal programme, schools in the Mpumuza area were gifted with tools to encourage pupils to plant more indigenous trees, save water and learn about the removal of alien invasive species.
