A PROUD MOMENT OF INNOVATION IN KZN

The Durban University of Technology (DUT), together with one of KZN EDTEA's public entities, the Moses Kotane Research Institute (MKRI) and MerSETA, have partnered to launch the Smart Robotics Lab - a cutting-edge facility that marks a major leap in robotics, automation and Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR).

The lab was unveiled today, 23 June 2025, at DUT’s Ritson Campus in Durban, drawing together leaders from academia, industry and government. In his keynote address KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs, Rev. Musa Zondi, emphasised the province’s commitment to harnessing smart technologies for inclusive growth, skills development and sustainable innovation. His message set the tone for a day that was filled with high-impact dialogue, live tech demonstrations, and meaningful collaboration.

Also in attendance were DUT Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Professor Thandwa Mthembu, along with representatives from MKRI, MerSETA, industry experts, students, researchers and stakeholders who all gathered to witness the lab’s official opening of the lab. The Smart Robotics Lab is envisioned as a dynamic platform to equip students and professionals with future-ready skills in robotics, AI and smart manufacturing.

The initiative positions KwaZulu-Natal as a leader in 4IR-focused education and applied research, while actively supporting South Africa’s broader innovation and industrial revitalisation efforts. MEC Zondi and the delegation experienced a hands-on demonstration of intelligent automation tools and engaged in discussions around the transformative role of technology in shaping the future of work and education. This milestone signals a shared vision—one where academia, government, and industry work together to build a thriving, technology-driven economy that empowers local talent and transforms communities.
