The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Economic Development,Tourism & Environmental Affairs (EDTEA) in collaboration with Durban University of Technology embarked on a journey to develop and deliver the KwaZulu-Natal Social Economy Development Programme (KZN SEDP) to existing social entrepreneurs.
The traditional model of entrepreneurship is premised on profit maximisation, while social entrepreneurship, on the other hand, emphasises viability while optimising the business impact on communities and the environment. Social entrepreneurship is a business with a conscience and a heart.
In light of this, the programme aimed to equip the selected participants with keys skills that they would require in order to scale their businesses so that they are able to have a greater impact in their communities. The programme was run over a period of 9 months which included both theoretical and practical components.
A total of 17 existing social entrepreneurs were selected from across the province and, 16 candidates have successfully completed the programme and today showcasing their businesses.
