Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife

The KwaZulu-Natal Nature Conservation Board (the Board) is a schedule 3c public entity reporting to the Department of Economic Development, Tourism, and Environmental Affairs. The Board derives its mandate from the KwaZulu-Natal Nature Conservation Management Act (Act No. 9 of 1997)

The Board derives its mandate from the KwaZulu-Natal Nature Conservation Management Act (Act No. 9 of 1997) also created the KwaZulu-Natal Nature Conservation Services which is the entity required to support the Board members in carrying out their mandate. The Board decided to register the name Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife (Ezemvelo) for trading and branding purposes.

The primary functions of the Board are:

• Direct the management of
  • nature conservation within the province;
  • protected areas; and
  • the development and promotion of ecotourism facilities within the protected areas
• Ensure the proper efficient and effective management of the Conservation Service

The history of Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife is a source of considerable pride for all associated with it. This organization has been at the forefront of South Africa’s conservation effort for many decades including rescuing the white rhino from the brink of extinction through Operation Rhino more than 50 years ago. The success of Ezemvelo can be attributed to a pioneering history as well as an ongoing adherence to strategies and plans that are in line with international best practices.

Ezemvelo manages more than 120 PAs which are terrestrial, coastal and marine reserves. It is entrusted with the responsibility for managing the uKhahlamba Drakensberg Park World Heritage Site as well as performing conservation and ecotourism activities within the iSimangaliso Wetlands Park World Heritage Site.

The organization also manages a number of Ramsar sites (wetlands of international importance), such as Ndumo Game Reserve, iSimangaliso, Ntsikeni etc.
