Tourism Services

Tourism is a concurrent function between the national and provincial governments. The province is tasked with functions relating to planning and policy making, regulation and monitoring, facilitation and implementation, coordination as well as the development and promotion of tourism in line with national imperatives.

• To develop provincial tourism policies, strategies and ensure their implementation thereof.
• To ensure that the industry is properly managed through proper regulations.
• To create a conducive environment for tourism to flourish thus contributing to economic growth and job creation.

The three main functions of Tourism Services are:

• Tourism Planning
  • Tourism Planning provides guidance, support and direction in terms of policies, legislation and strategies aimed at promoting tourism to benefit the majority of KwaZulu-Natal communities. To clearly guide spatial development of tourism and define the clear role of the private sector at all levels in tourism planning. The continuous development of the tourism sector will assist in diversifying South Africa's economy and contribute immensely towards achieving the overall objectives of the National Tourism Sector Strategy and the Provincial Tourism Master Plan.
• Tourism Growth and Development
  • Tourism Growth and Development provisions of sustainability of tourism growth and development through identification and stimulation of demand-led products, develop appropriate tourism infrastructure, and inspire innovation to guide the development of tourism to achieve geographic spread and enhance visitor experience. In addition, the sub-programme is responsible for the professionalization of Tourist Guides and registration of tourism businesses in the province to ensure that the tourism industry is regulated and enforce compliance with the legislation.

  • Tourism Sector Transformation facilitates and promotes tourism sector transformation.
