The Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs in partnership with The Under2 Coalition of The Climate Group, Ricardo Energy & Environment (UK based environmental consultancy) and Sustainable Energy Africa (South African based energy and development non-governmental organisation) recently hosted the Climate Footprint Project- workshop. This project seeks to support the Province in building and strengthening capacity towards the development of a greenhouse gas inventory and a Measurement, Reporting and Verification (MRV) system to better understand the mitigation opportunities presented by Province’s climate change emissions profile.
During the 2 days’ workshop, there were presentations concerning Measurement, Reporting and Verification (MRV) and Transparency, what a Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Inventory is and the relevance of compiling GHG inventories for mitigation action planning. Topics such as the buy-in for active participation in the compilation process by a wider stakeholder group (e.g. data providers) involved in the GHG inventory compilation were also discussed. After all the discussions and presentations were done, they then noticed the key data gaps regarding the KZN Province GHG Inventory and validated those gaps.
